DANNY BROWN ON DETROIT
"It might be a piece a shit, but it’s they piece of shit, so they gone treat it like it’s gold."

DANNY BROWN ON BIG SEAN
"You listen to how I talk about Detroit, and you listen to how a rapper like Big Sean talk about Detroit, and it’s like we’re talking about two different cities. Which is probably true, because Detroit is that type of city—he went to the best high school in the city, you know, he probably was real spoiled or sheltered, so it’s like two different worlds. He can look at it and talk about guap, and we don’t have any."

DANNY BROWN

FADER FORT PRESENTED BY CONVERSE

AN OPTIMISTIC PREVIEW OF 2013
D’Angelo’s new LP is finally—13 years since his last one was released—“99% done,” and will be turned in “next month,” according to Questlove, who supposedly contributes drums. (Questlove did say it was 97% complete two years ago, though.) We’ll see. Every year on earth starts with bullshit promises for the months to come, but for whatever reason, I feel like giving some long-quiet, supposedly-doing-something artists the benefit of the doubt. The Avalanches are 13 years due, too; they released a mixtape last year, which is promising. Supposedly Danny Brown rapped on their long-in-progress new one—hey, he said he was 75% done his own just last month! Missy? Maybe. M.I.A. seems to at least have something. The Knife, definitely. Justin is weirdly ambiguous, given such deliberate promo. Miley Cyrus produced by Pharrell? Okay, why not. And on, and on, and on. All 22 artists on this playlist are prooobbbbaaaabbblllyyyy releasing something this year. Maybe we’ll hear all of them, ha. Either way, their old stuff still sounds great.
Tracklist:
D’Angelo - Brown Sugar
Earl Sweatshirt - Chum
Justin Timberlake - Cry Me a River
Missy Elliott - She’s a Bitch

WINTER BREAK LONG READS: REVISIT OUR 2012 COVER STORIES

“It was a long period of my life where I was just a nobody,” he says. “And for a while, that’s what my family thought I would be, just a guy sleeping on a couch, writing his name on an orange juice like, Don’t touch that shit.”
